I started Strategic Point Marketing (an advertising agency) in 2009 – 30 days before my wedding day. If you recall, in 2009 the ‘modern day depression’ was hurting all types of companies. The advertising agency that employed me for the previous 5 years was not immune to the downturn of the market.

As I got back to my apartment to my soon-to-be wife, I was not sure what I was going to do. It was a tough conversation for the first 24 hrs.

I quickly realized that I had to either pick myself up and do something or just lie on my couch forever in pity. That is when it hit me. I was good at what I do!

In June of 2009 I started my advertising agency. Driving from city to city in a 1992 Toyota Celica, that eventually blew the engine on the highway
about 1 hr. south of Kansas City, I made my way across the country speaking at any event I could get into. I was teaching about marketing strategies, how to do it yourself, how to know who was taking advantage of you and anything else I could think of to educate business owners about. In 2010, I drove to Chicago from Dallas. I didn’t have enough money to stay in a hotel, so I looked around everywhere and found one of those hotels that you can buy a half day rate (the not so nice type). I checked in around 1am, slept for about 4 hours, took a shower and went to the conference where I was speaking that day. During that conference I was able to sign my first big account.

My whole life I have been the type of man that always did whatever I said. I understand and believe that my word is my bond. That is why I decided in 2014 not to do any more contracts. I felt like that is a dirty word and I realized that I didn’t want to keep anyone tied to my company if they were unhappy. This was a huge paradigm shift in my life and company, but it has paid off in big ways!

There was a report published in 2018 which said the average advertising agency keeps a client for an average of 18 months. I was blown away. I looked at my entire book of clients and realized at that moment that I was on the right track.

 

Here is the key to what I am proud to share.

I started this company to give business owners an option to work without a long-term contract. I started doing engagement letters that only ask for a 45-day exit. I taught my team that we will ALWAYS do what we say we will do. I have refunded THOUSANDS of dollars to clients when my staff has not done what was promised. Then I saw the biggest shock that made me swell with pride in a sense of knowing all my hard work was paying off.

we will complete that action and the clients’ business will reap the rewards.

The hardest thing to do as a business owner in your position is to trust ‘another marketing company.’ I get it. My hope is that through this website you will gain some knowledge as to what to look for when hiring a marketing company. Know what you should expect and then demand those expectations be met.
